Biden arrives at divided G20 summit in Bali as Cambodian leader tests positive for COVID-19

President Joe Biden on Tuesday sought to further isolate Russia over its war in Ukraine, as the country’s President Volodomyr Zelensky said the recapture of Kherson was like the Allied landings in France on D-Day.

“It was not yet an end point in the fight against evil, but it already determined the whole further course of events. That’s exactly how we feel now,” he told G20 leaders meeting in Bali via video link on Tuesday.

According to AFP, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov remained in his seat to hear the speech – and European leaders remained in theirs for his remarks – despite threats of a walkout before the start of the summit.

A global energy crisis, inflation and climate change were all on the agenda as leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies gathered on the Indonesian island.

But no issue has cast a darker shadow over the summit than Russia’s war in Ukraine.

“I am convinced that the time has come when the destructive Russian war must and can be stopped,” Zelensky said, appearing remotely at a conference that Russian President Vladimir Putin ignored.

“It will save thousands of lives.”

Zelensky delivered his speech after making a dramatic return to Kherson following a Russian military withdrawal from the regional capital which it seized after its invasion in February.

Zelensky found good company among the leaders who gathered at the luxurious Kempinski Hotel, which offers spectacular ocean views.

China’s Xi Jinping condemned the “weaponization” of food and energy in what observers saw as a rare critique of Vladimir Putin’s handling of the war in Ukraine.

“We must firmly oppose the politicization, instrumentalization and militarization of food and energy issues,” he said.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called Russia a “pariah state”, telling reporters he planned to “unequivocally condemn” Moscow for its invasion.

Asked how he would handle Lavrov, Sunak told reporters: “I will take this opportunity to unequivocally condemn the Russian state and Putin for their heinous and illegal war.”

Biden and his allies try to pin painfully high food and fuel prices on Vladimir Putin in a bid to build consensus between countries like India and China that have been reluctant to speak out against China.

Ahead of a joint G20 statement condemning the eight-month-old invasion and threats to use nuclear weapons, US and European officials have painted the summit as evidence of Russia’s growing isolation .

But before meetings could even begin, the Cambodian prime minister, who hosted Joe Biden and other leaders over the weekend, announced he had tested positive for COVID-19.

A statement posted on Hun Sen’s Facebook page said he was going home and canceling the meetings.

Biden was 30 minutes late leaving his hotel for the summit, and the White House later said he tested negative.

As he welcomed his guests to the tropical island of Bali, summit host Widodo said: “Being responsible does not mean creating zero-sum situations, being responsible here also means we have to end the war.”

Earlier, a US official said the G20 would condemn Russia’s war.

“I won’t preempt the final negotiations, but the G20 will make it clear that Russia’s war is wreaking havoc all over the world and for the global economy as a whole,” said the official, who referred to the view. American on the summit on condition of anonymity.

“It will be clear that most of the G20 members condemn Russia’s war and the immense suffering of this cause both for Ukrainians and for families in the developing world who face food and energy insecurity. Consequently.”

However, he was unable to say what form the condemnation would take, whether it would be a statement signed by 11 countries or 19, or whether it would be a statement issued by the president. Indonesian, who chairs the group.

The summit is already short with the departure of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen.

Officials hope that none of his guests at the weekend summit of Southeast Asian leaders and others will be affected.

Guests included Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang.

A day earlier, Biden cleared his throat and apologized to reporters during a press conference.

“Excuse me, I have a little cold,” he said.

All of this marked an uncertain start to the summit, where leaders had already decided to skip the traditional “family photo” so the likes of Biden can avoid having to smile for the camera alongside Sergei Lavrov, Russia’s foreign minister.

But US officials say the summit will include condemnation of Russia.
