Rep. Lauren Boebert tore up San Francisco’s proposal to award some $5 million in reparations to black residents, saying California never had slavery.
While the Golden State was admitted into the union as a free state, slaves were of course brought there before and after it became a state.
“It’s a joke that supposedly serious people in San Francisco are considering a plan that would award $5,000,000 in reparations to every black resident of their city in a state that never experienced slavery,” wrote Boebert on Twitter.

A city-appointed reparations committee recently presented a number of lofty proposals on how to atone for the past enslavement of African Americans – payments of $5 million to every eligible black adult, the elimination of personal debt and tax burdens, guaranteed annual incomes of at least $97,000 for 250 years, and homes in San Francisco for just $1 per family were among them.
Critics called the plan financially and politically impossible. An estimate from Stanford University’s Hoover Institution, which is conservative, said it would cost at least $600,000 for every non-black family in the city to donate $5 million in reparations.
Reparations are being considered in various Democratic cities across America as a way to compensate descendants of enslaved African Americans.
Many say they are due not only to the time when their ancestors were enslaved, but also to subsequent generations, because African Americans were incarcerated at disproportionately higher rates than white Americans.
The proposals put forward in San Francisco last night are among the most generous heard to date.
Sergeant Yulanda Williams, president of the police association Officers for Justice, told the council: ‘My dad always taught me never to beg. And I’m not begging you today. It’s time for you to do the right thing and give us reparations: fix us”
The Supervisory Board, which heard the suggestions last night, can vote to adopt all or part of the recommendations.
Of the 11 people on the board, one — board chairman Shamann Walton — is African American.
Council won’t decide whether or not to adopt the recommendations until later this year, once the committee that presented the draft plan has submitted a final report.
Another meeting is scheduled for September.
The board, however, signaled its enthusiasm for the plan last night.
“If you look at the (draft) report, you’ll see so many examples of how black people were mistreated here in San Francisco, and it can all really be attributed to the negative effects of slavery,” Walton said. Lastly. night.
