Brazilian soccer legend Pele is in “stable condition” and “in full control of his vital functions” after being admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo.

The 82-year-old, who is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer, was taken to Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday with swelling all over his body and heart problems.

It was also reported that his chemotherapy treatment was no longer working and that Pelé suffered from mental confusion after his admission.

However, a hospital update said the three-time World Cup winner did not need to be admitted to an intensive care unit. [ICU].

A statement published in Brazilian media said: “After a medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a ward, without the need for hospitalization in a semi-intensive or intensive care unit.”

The hospital confirmed that Pelé had been hospitalized “for reassessment of chemotherapy treatment for the colon tumor identified in September 2021”.

There is no timetable for Pele’s hospital stay, and his wife Marcia Aoki and her caregiver are at his bedside.

However, Pele’s daughter, Kely Nascimento, who is not in Brazil, insisted on Tuesday that there was no cause for alarm and that her father’s hospitalization was “not a surprise or an emergency”.

Pelé was hospitalized for six days last year and underwent surgery to remove a tumor from his colon. Brazil’s Globo news site said Pelé was undergoing routine checkups at Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo when the undisclosed issue was detected.
