BREAKING: Environmental activists target ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ masterpiece at Dutch museum
Environmental activists have targeted the world famous painting Girl with a Pearl Earring by Johannes Vermeer in the Netherlands in the latest brazen attack on a gallery.
Three Just Stop Oil vandals have been arrested at the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, and the artwork is believed to be intact.
Footage circulating online shows a protester appearing to stick his bald head on the glass in front of the painting.
His accomplice then poured a can of crushed tomatoes over his head and they removed their jackets to reveal their Just Stop Oil t-shirts, to the groans of visitors from the nearby gallery.
‘How do you feel? How do you feel when you see something beautiful and priceless being seemingly destroyed right before your eyes?
‘Do you feel outraged? Good. Where is this feeling when we see the planet being destroyed before our eyes.
‘This painting is protected by glass, it’s very good.
‘The vulnerable people in the countries of the South, they are not protected, the future of our children is not protected.
“People in fuel poverty who have to choose between heating or eating are not protected.”
Shocked visitors could be heard heckling the “stupid” protesters, telling them to “shut up” during the protest.
It comes after a series of similar attacks in galleries around the world, with protesters in Britain throwing a can of soup at Van Gogh’s iconic sunflowers earlier this month.
