Ireland holds its breath for one of its biggest murder trials as ‘very important new evidence’ delays the hearing against Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch in the death of a Kinahan Cartel associate during a week

  • Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch appeared in court in Dublin today charged with murder
  • Hutch is charged with the 2016 Regency Hotel shooting that killed David Byrne
  • David was the brother of Liam Byrne, considered the Irish leader of the Kinahan gang
  • Liam’s son Lee is believed to be dating Steven Gerard’s daughter Lilly-Ella

Gerry ‘The Monk’ Hutch appeared in an Irish court today charged with murder following a fatal shooting at a Dublin hotel in 2016.

Hutch, 59, wore a white shirt and sported what appeared to be a hearing aid as he entered the Special Criminal Court in the Irish capital, charged with orchestrating the shooting of David Byrne.

Byrne was shot dead by AK-wielding gunmen at the Regency Hotel in Dublin during a boxing weigh-in amid a gang feud. He was the younger brother of Liam Byrne – identified by police as the Kinahan gang’s chief operating officer in Ireland.

It is believed Liam was at the hotel with Daniel Kinahan – believed to be the target of the shooting – but the couple escaped. Last week, Liam was pictured hanging out with Steven Gerard, as his son dates the footballer’s daughter.

The court was told that “very significant additional evidence” against Hutch had come to light and the trial would be postponed until next week.

A judge ordered the move after agreeing the evidence was significant enough to warrant ‘a fundamental reassessment of defense strategy’.

The court was told that the additional evidence had been served and what remains outstanding is the correspondence from the defense team attorney.

The court also heard that the trial was not expected to “start properly” on Monday morning due to the additional evidence provided.

Jonathan Dowdall, a former Sinn Fein adviser, is expected to give evidence against Hutch, 59, at trial.

Armed police were pictured in court today, with the Irish Independent saying firearms officers were on hand to escort Hutch from Wheatfield prison to the wharf.

Plainclothes officers were also present in the courtroom itself, with the building having been scanned in advance by sniffer dogs to check for explosives and weapons.

Armed patrols were also deployed to keep an eye on the homes of senior members of the Hutch gang.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officers were on hand to prevent clashes between members of the Hutch and Kinahan clans – who were supposed to be present.

Paul Murphy and Jason Bonney will also stand trial accused of providing logistical support to the Regency Hotel kill-squad.

The trial is expected to last eight weeks, but it could be delayed as Hutch’s legal team requests more time to review new evidence.
