  • The adult buff goat weighs five times more than the adult golden eagle
  • The ‘brutal’ murder of a mountain goat will feature in the BBC’s Frozen Planet II series

This is the stunning moment a golden eagle sinks its talons into a mountain goat’s neck before lifting the flailing animal into the air and dropping it to its death in the Italian Alps.

Although the adult buff goat weighs five times as much as the golden eagle, extraordinary footage shows the predator preying on the unsuspecting animal on the ground from above.

The “brutal” killing of the mountain goat, a phenomenon the BBC says has never been filmed before, will feature in Sunday’s episode of Sir David Attenborough’s Frozen Planet II series.

The episode, titled Frozen Peaks, features footage of a pair of eagles plucking baby chamois from the cliffs of Italian cliffs and leaving them to die before eating their remains.

But at the end of the summer, to the surprise of the film crew, a golden eagle was seen attacking an adult buff goat in footage shared on BBC Breakfast this morning.

Usually, golden eagles attack baby chamois and other medium-sized mammals such as rabbits, hares and grouse.

The predator then manages to drag the goat into the air before dropping it into the air, leaving the animal to plummet to its death.

The two eagles were then seen feasting on the carcass of the mountain goat.

BBC producer Alex Lanchester said the Frozen Planet crew couldn’t believe what they witnessed.

Mr Lanchester told The Express: ‘This has never been filmed before. We knew they were going to get the calves in the spring – but not the adults.

“This is extraordinary behavior. These goats weigh [five] times the weight of the eagle so it’s incredibly heavy.

“They are huge and the way eagles kill them is they pick them up and drop them off the cliff. It’s very rough. They hunt in pairs.
