University student David Spriegel was in his second week of summer internship when he had the discovery of his life.

The 21-year-old, who just finished his freshman year at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota, was preparing a stack of old papers to be recorded in a database and stored.

As he examined the documents at the aptly named Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois he noticed a small inscription that had previously been overlooked.

It read: ‘The memorandum above is in the inscription of Abraham Lincoln. — Mr. Hay.

The 167-year-old documents are handwritten memos detailing plots of land bought and sold in Springfield, dating back to when the future president was a lawyer there.

The intended recipient, Milton Hay, a clerk in the office of Stuart and Lincoln, is said to have recognized his handwriting.

Experts have now confirmed the documents are genuine Lincolns and will join the museum’s more than 1,800 other original manuscripts from the president.

Memorabilia related to the 16th President of the United States can fetch thousands of dollars, and even items related to Lincoln’s dog, Fido, are purchased by enthusiasts.

Lincoln, assassinated by famed actor John Wilkes Booth on April 15, 1865, was the first Republican president when elected in 1860.

A spokesperson told the Daily Herald newspaper that such a discovery is indeed very unusual, especially for someone as green as Spriegel.

“It’s a rare find, of course – one or two such documents could appear every year or so,” museum spokesman David Blanchette said.

“This kind of discovery is rarely made by an inexperienced trainee.

“These are usually researchers with many years of experience,” Blanchette said.
