Louis Tomlinson says it would be a 'shame' if One Direction didn't reunite

Reunion: Louis Tomlinson said he thought

Louis Tomlinson said he thought it would be a “shame” if he and his One Direction bandmates never got together.

The singer, 30, was one-fifth of the band that first rose to prominence on The X Factor in 2010 and went on to become one of the most successful boy bands of all time.

Speaking on Thursday’s episode of Lorraine on ITV, Louis spoke about the prospect of the reunion and also touched on the band’s rise to prominence.

Asked about the possibility of getting back together, he said: “One day there are a lot of moving parts, but it would be a shame if we didn’t. I hope.’

One Direction consisted of Louis, Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Liam Payne.

Zayn left the band in early 2015 and the other four released another album – Made In The AM – before going their separate ways.

Speaking about the band’s success, Louis said, “It’s easier to see now from the outside looking inside, it was a crazy but amazing time to be with other people. It would have been scary to go through this alone at that age.

Lorraine told Louis she couldn’t believe her son Freddie was six and Louis replied, “Yeah, such a big age right now.”

Lorraine then asked, “Does he know now that his dad is a big deal?”

Louis laughed and said, “I’m not going to lie, until he watched my show on tour in Los Angeles maybe four months ago, it was just stories of me trying to explain to him what I’m doing – obviously a whole difficult thing to explain really.

“But it was amazing to watch him – I could see him, I spotted where he was, he had arrived with his own little banner.

“He normally goes to bed at 7 a.m., but he stayed awake the whole gig. It was definitely the most emotional gig I’ve done – it was still amazing.

Louis also talked about recording his new album and how it differed from his first album. He revealed: “It was a bit of a process on my first record – there was an element of trial and error.

“Obviously, coming out of a band the size of One Direction, it takes time to find yourself, musically, but I really think I found that on this album and this single.”

Lorraine said it was an optimistic record and Louis replied, “It was a conscious decision.” On my first record, there was an emotional weight that I think was good for the time, but I just wanted to let go of that now and be optimistic.

Lorraine added, “That’s where you are in yourself,” and Louis replied, “Exactly.

Louis also revealed he had the chance to “declutter his brain” during the lockdown.

He said: “Everyone’s experience is individual. For my part, I spend a large part of my life thinking about what will come next. And there is always an element of pressure in my life, which I am used to.

‘What was great about that time was that it gave me a chance to declutter my brain and really think about the next album, and what do I want it to sound and feel like?

“If I hadn’t had that time to reset it might well have been a different record, so I’m happy to have that time.”

Lorraine airs weekdays at 9am on ITV.
