Legendary Brazilian star Pele’s health has reportedly deteriorated after he was admitted to hospital in Sao Paulo with swelling all over his body.
Pele, who is currently undergoing treatment for metastatic cancer, went to Albert Einstein Hospital on Tuesday for an unscheduled visit after being taken away by his wife Marcia Aokoi and a caregiver, according to ESPN Brasil.
The Einstein’s medical staff confirmed his condition as anasarca (general swelling), edemigemic syndrome (general edema) and even identified “decompensated heart failure”.
It is also reported that his chemotherapy treatment for his cancer is no longer working, as he was diagnosed with mental confusion upon entering the hospital, where he was restless.
He is due to undergo several tests today for further evaluation of the detected problems and disorders in his organs which have been affected by the metastatic cancer.
They are also set to consider the likelihood of hepatic encephalopathy, while Pele is also struggling to eat.
It is an extremely worrying time for medical staff and Pelé’s family, with particular concern over the failure of his cancer treatment.
