Lisbon. Portuguese President Marcelo Rebello de Souza has announced the dissolution of parliament. He announced the dissolution of the parliament on Thursday and set a date for the next parliamentary elections.

His speech, aired on national television, set January 30, 2022 as the date for the next general election.

He further added that the current parliament has not been able to find a solution to end the political crisis in the country.

Portugal’s political crisis has taken a new turn after the Socialist Party’s (PS) government budget was rejected by parliament last month. For the first time in Portugal’s 45-year history, the budget was rejected by parliament, officials said.

President Suja had earlier warned that if the budget is rejected by the parliament, the parliament will be dissolved and elections will be declared. He says there is no alternative to dissolving the parliament and holding elections to resolve the current political crisis.
