A young Ukrainian refugee is fighting for her life after she was apparently the target of a violent knife attack in County Clare yesterday morning.

The eight-year-old victim remains in critical condition alongside his mother, aged around 40, who was also found unconscious at the scene of a domestic residence in the village of Clarecastle near Ennis in Ireland.

Gardai launched a major investigation to establish the circumstances of the apparent attack, and specialist investigators were deployed due to the young age of the child victim.

The couple were staying at a center for refugees who fled their homeland amid the ongoing war with Russia, according to Independent.ie.

Other refugees staying at the center have been moved to emergency accommodation in central Ennis as the gardai cordon off the crime scene.

The victims were found at Clarecastle Residence but were rushed to Limerick University Hospital where they were placed in intensive care.
