White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield tests positive for Covid

White House communications director Kate Bedingfield has tested positive for covid but said she was not considered close contact with President Joe Biden

On Friday, White House communications director Kate Bedingfield tested positive for covid, she announced, adding that she was not considered close contact with President Joe Biden.

Bedingfield, who is vaccinated and strengthened, said she last saw the president on Wednesday but wore a mask when meeting him.

“This morning I tested positive for COVID-19. I last saw the president on Wednesday at a social distance meeting while wearing an N-95 mask, and he is not considered as a close contact as defined by the CDC,’ she wrote on Twitter.

She said she had minor symptoms and would be working from home.

“Thanks to my full vaccination and my boost, I only feel mild symptoms. In accordance with White House COVID-19 protocols, I will be working from home and plan to return to work in person at the end of a five-day isolation period and testing negative,’ she said. note.

Bedingfield is the latest official close to the president to test positive for covid.

Vice President Kamala Harris tested positive earlier this week and is working in isolation.

She was prescribed and took the antiviral drug Paxlovid after consulting with her doctors.

A White House official told Reuters on Thursday that Harris remains asymptomatic, has called members of Congress and held several staff meetings.

Harris will virtually meet with leaders from 15 Caribbean countries on Friday as part of his homework.

Second Mr. Doug Emhoff posted a photo on his social media accounts of the Vice President working at the Naval Observatory this week.

“She’s feeling great and working from home,” he noted.

In the photo, Harris sits at her desk and smiles at the camera.

The positive tests come ahead of Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.

President Biden is due to attend the event, which is taking place at the Washington Hilton. There were fears the dinner, which has around 3,000 guests, could become a covid superspreader like the Gridiron white tie dinner did in early April.

The White House has acknowledged that the president could, at some point, test positive for covid.

But officials pointed to the protocols in place to ensure the safety of the 79-year-old president.

They argue that since Biden is vaccinated and doubly boosted, he would likely only have minor symptoms. They note that Biden is regularly tested and that many of their meetings are socially distanced. The White House dropped its face mask policy after the case rate dropped, but staff sometimes still wear masks.

The White House said President Joe Biden will attend the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner on Saturday and highlighted the protocols in place around him to protect him from covid.

Meanwhile, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the president’s top medical adviser, pulled out of the correspondents’ dinner, telling ABC News, who had invited him, that he could no longer attend due to his own risk. personnel from contracting COVID-19.

Fauci attended the April 2 Gridiron dinner where at least 80 of the roughly 630 attendees tested positive for COVID as a result.

The White House Correspondents Association requires all guests to have tested negative for covid on the day of the dinner and be vaccinated.

For the Gridiron dinner, guests only had to show their vaccination records.

Among the VIPs to catch COVID after Gridiron: Attorney General Merrick Garland, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo – who was one of the speakers – New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Representatives Adam Schiff, Julian Castro and Elaine Luria .

Fauci was seated on the dais with Raimondo and Garland, but was seated in multiple seats.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki confirmed this week that President Biden still plans to attend the Correspondents’ Dinner, saying “like many Americans, he is assessing the risks.”

“It is possible that the president will test positive,” she added.

She noted that it was important for Biden to show it, especially after former President Donald Trump skipped the media dinner during his sole term.

“It contrasts sharply with his predecessor, who not only questioned the legitimacy of the press almost daily, but also never attended the dinner, I don’t believe,” the press secretary added. “So he felt it was important and did a risk assessment to do that in consultation with his doctors and healthcare team.”

PSAKI added that the president would take extra precautions, including possibly wearing a mask when not speaking. PSAKI – who has contracted COVID twice – said she will likely wear a mask as well.

Biden will not attend the dinner portion of the evening but will be there for speeches and the presentation of scholarships to journalism students.

“And we have also taken measures, including that he does not participate in the meal portion of dinner,” Psaki said. “And he will be there for the program, which includes a number of speakers, the award presentation, as you know, and of course his speaking and roasting – where he will be on the menu, as he likes to do. say – Trevor Noah speaks.
