White House goes after Comer over Beau Biden comments

On Wednesday, the White House tore up Republican Rep. James Comer’s ‘ugly’ and ‘despicable’ claims that President Joe Biden’s deceased son Beau should have been charged alongside a Delaware man who violated laws. on campaign finance.

Comer, who chairs the powerful House Oversight Committee, appeared Monday on a podcast with conservative commentator Lou Dobbs.

During the episode of The Great America Show with Lou Dobbs, he brought up the case of Christopher Tigani, a Wilmington owner of a beer distributor who was sentenced to two years in federal prison for campaign finance violations. in 2012.

Tigani donated money to senior Biden and was investigated by U.S. Attorney David Weiss, the same U.S. attorney overseeing the federal investigation into Hunter Biden for his taxes.

Beau Biden, then Delaware’s attorney general, recused himself from Tigani’s case because he had donated to his father.

Beau Biden died of glioblastoma in 2015. His father brings it up frequently in speeches, especially when talking about health care for Americans.

“This American lawyer … had the opportunity to sue the Bidens years ago. In fact, it was Beau Biden, the president’s other son, who was implicated in some campaign donations from a person who was also charged,’ Comer told Dobbs. “But, you know, nothing ever happened. So I don’t know much about this American lawyer, other than he had the opportunity to investigate the Bidens before and chose not to.

“We all know he was quiet for a long time,” Comer added.

A special prosecutor’s report later said there was no evidence the Bidens knew about Tigani’s fraudulent campaign reimbursements, The Washington Post reported.

Comer’s comments come as he spoke out about using his power as head of the oversight committee to investigate “Biden family influence peddling”.

The GOP-led committee plans to review Hunter Biden’s foreign business dealings in Ukraine and China.

During an appearance on Morning Joe on Wednesday, White House communications director Kate Bedingfield called Comer’s allegations about Beau Biden “appalling.”

‘It’s despicable. And frankly, that says a lot — nothing good — about Jim Comer,” she said. “I think for the American people to hear something like that from Congressman Comer, they will assess what it says about him. I would say what that says about him is pretty despicable.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre echoed that sentiment during Wednesday’s briefing.

Jean-Pierre called it “completely” inappropriate and said it showed Republicans wanted to do “political stunts”.

“And it’s ugly, the comments he made, and it says a lot about the president, which is not good by the way. To make the statement he made is incredibly ugly and inappropriate,’ the press secretary said.

“Here’s what I would say, instead of House Republicans focusing on attacking the President and his family, why don’t they really focus on what the American people have empowered them to do, which is deliver for them,” she added.

Jean-Pierre said the midterm election results — which were disappointing for Republicans, despite the GOP gaining tight control of the House — showed Americans want to see the two parties work together.

“They want to see Congress work for them. That’s what they want to see,” she encouraged.
